The Blessings of Friday

Like Ramzan, Friday is the sacred and blessed day of the week. It is an important day for the Muslims. On this day Muslims congregate in the mosques to pray namaz-e-jumm’ah. This blessed day is very dear to Allah and in His sight it has more greatness than Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid –ul-Adha (Reported in Ibn Majah).   Friday in Islam carries many virtues and merits such as: it was the day Adam was created and sent to paradise and sent down to earth; Allah answers our supplications on this day, there is an hour on this day during which a person’s lawful and good prayers (duas) are granted, the Day of Qiyamah will be on Friday. All these characteristics are mentioned in the following hadith.

It was narrated that Abu Lubaabah ibn ‘Abd al-Mundhir said: The Prophet (PBUH) said: “Friday is the master of days, and the greatest of them before Allah. It is greater before Allah than the day of al-Adha and the day of al-Fitr. It has five characteristics: on this day Allah created Adam, on it He sent Adam down to the earth, on it Allah caused Adam to die, on it there is a time when a person does not ask Allah for anything but He gives it to him, so long as he does not ask for anything haraam, and on it the Hour will begin. There is no angel who is close to Allah, no heaven, no earth, no wind, no mountain and no sea that does not fear Friday.”  (Narrated by Ibn Maajah)

Among the above mentioned virtues of Friday, there is Friday prayer (Salaat-ul-Jumma). It is the best prayer and is offered in congregation. It is offered in place of Zhuhr prayer. Muslims should wait anxiously and eagerly and start preparing for it from the Thursday might. A Muslim should take a bath, dress in clean clothes, wear perfume and go to mosque to attend the sermon (khutba) and pray namaz.  The person receives the most benefit on Friday is the one who spends it in remembrance of Allah Almighty, supplicating before his Lord. It is recommended to recite Surat al-Kahf completely the night before Friday or on the day itself before Maghrib time.

The Prophet said, “Whoever recites Surah al-kahf on the night of jumm’ah, will have a light that will stretch between him and the ancient house (the Ka’bah)”  (Narrated by Abu Sa’eed al- Kudri ) and

“Whoever reads Surah al-Kahf on the day of Jumu’ah, a light will shine for him from beneath his feet to the clouds of the sky, which will shine for him on the Day of Resurrection, and he will be forgiven (his sins) between the two Fridays.”

Some other virtues of Friday include:

  • Praying Fajr in congregation on Fridays is the best prayer that the Muslim can pray during the week.
  • Whoever dies during the day or night of Friday, Allah will protect him from the trial of the grave
  • Allah will seal the heart of the man, who does not pray three Friday prayers out of negligence.
  • The best zikr one can do is Salawat ala Rasul or Durood Shareef as much as possible.
  • It is mentioned in a hadith that the person who fasts on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays of every sacred month, he will receive the reward of making ibaadah for 700 years.

A Muslim should not spend this holy and blessed day ideally or waste it in personnel pleasures. One should whole heartedly spend the day in prayers and worshipping Allah so that he can obtain the rewards and mercy that Allah has promised him.
