Importance of first ten days of Dhu al- Hijjah

Dhu al-Hijjah is the last scared month of Islamic calendar. In this prestigious month the great pilgrimage takes place in the holy city of Makkah. Muslims from around the world gather and offer congregational prayers in the name of Allah the Almighty. The Hajj pilgrimage takes place on 8th, 9th and 10th the month and. Eid-ul-Azha, the second Muslim festival falls on 10th oh Dhu al-Hihhaj.

The first ten days of Zil hajj are the most noteworthy days of the month. They must be spend doing pious deeds, prayers and supplications. The importance of 10 days can be guessed from the ayah “By the dawn; by the ten nights”. Allah has sworn an oath by them which is enough of an indication of importance and great benefit. 

Imam Ahmad narrated from Ibn Umar, from the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) that he said: “There aren’t any days greater, nor any days in which deeds done in them are more beloved to Allah Most High, than these ten days (of Dhul-Hijjah). So, increase in them the saying of Tahleel (Laa-ilaaha-ill-Allah), and Takbeer (Allahu-Akbar) and Tahmeed (al-hamdu-lillaah).”

The Prophet said, “No good deeds done on other days are superior to those done on these (first ten days of Dhal Hajja).” Then some companions of the Prophet said, “Not even Jihad?” He replied, “Not even Jihad”, except that of a man who does it by putting himself and his property in danger (for Allah’s sake) and does not return with any of those things.”(Bukhari 15: 86)

The 9th of zilHaj is a very scared day in terms of forgiveness of sins of the past and preceding year. The Holy Prophet said, “It expiates the sins of the preceding year and the coming year” (Muslim 6: 2603)”

After all the emphasis on importance of the first ten days of zilHaj a Muslim should do the following ibadah.

  • Recite the masnoon dua when sighting the moon of zilHaj.
  • Recite the Takbiraat as much as possible from the 1st to the 13th of zilHaj.
  • After sighting the moon of zilHaj, do not cut or trim your hair and nails until you have offered the sacrifice. As Rasool Allah saw has ordered:

“When any one of you intending to sacrifice the animal enters in the month (of Dhu’l-Hijja) he should not get his hair or nails touched (cut)” (Muslim 22: 4870)

 

  • Perform good deeds (Fasting, charity, voluntary prayers, zikr, etc) as much as possible.
  • Observe the fast of 9th zilHaj as it leads to expiation of sins of the previous year and the coming year.
