Remembering Allah

“Therefore remember Me (by praying, glorifying). I will remember you.” (Quran 2:152)

When we remember Allah, He remembers us. The nourishment of heart lies in remembrance (dhikr) of Allah. The remembrance of Allah is important in every moment and in every breath we take. It’s like oxygen necessary for sustaining life. Without dhikr hearts feel empty and heartened and further from Islam and into vile and absence things. The Prophet (saw) (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Do not talk too much without remembering and mentioning Allah, for too much talk without mentioning Allah hardens the heart, and the person farthest from Allah is the one with a hard heart.” (Tirmidhi)

The journey of life is a constant toil and at the end of this journey we will meet our Creator Allah. The journey is no doubt arduous but for the person who remembers Allah and keeps himself away from distractions of Satan then his destination i.e. meeting Allah will be easy to reach and fruitful. The remembrance of Allah serves as a source of strength for believers and guides them towards sirat-e-mustaqeem.  According to one hadith qudsi, Allah says: “I am with my servant as long as he remembers Me.”

There is a difference between regular ritual acts of worship and dhikr. A person cannot engage in worship excessively but to keep himself occupied with remembrance of Allah, he can do dhikr profusely with heart and tongue. Allah says: “And remember your Rubb by your tongue and within yourself, humbly and with fear and without loudness in words, in the mornings and in the afternoons, and be not of those who are neglectful.” (Quran 7:205). Prophet Muhammad (saw) said: “Those who enter paradise will not be sorry for anything they did in this life, except the moments they spent without the remembrance of Allah.”

“O you who believe! Remember Allah with much remembrance. And glorify His Praises morning and afternoon [the early morning (Fajr) and ‘Asr prayers].” (Quran 33:41, 42)

Remember Allah morning and evening and never cease to do so. May Allah make us of people “who remember Allah while standing or sitting or [lying] on their sides and give thought to the creation of the heavens and the earth, [saying], “Our Lord, You did not create this aimlessly; exalted are You [above such a thing]; then protect us from the punishment of the Fire.” (Quran 3:191)
