While in Prostration

Abu Hurairah (RA) reported: The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said, “A slave becomes nearest to his Rubb when he is in prostration. So increase supplications while prostrating.” [Muslim]

Prostration (sujood) is the heart of prayer. It is an essential part of salat. Some do prostration simply because it is part of salat, others because it is where we make supplication and some because they feel humility of soul, happiness and glorification of Allah. A true believer finds himself closest to Allah when he is in prostration. It is the place of utmost happiness, peace and security for them.  Hence if you want to be close to Allah you have to go into prostration. The Prophet (saw) said, “The closest that a servant is to his Lord is when he is in prostration.” (Muslim)

Allah elevates the position of those who humble themselves before Allah and go into sujood. The Prophet (saw) said, “Whoever humbles himself before Allah, Allah will elevate him.” (Muslim)

Ibn Taymiyyah said that the souls of people are brought closer to Allah during prostration. The Prophet taught us: “Prostrate much because there is no Muslim that prostrates to God except that God raises him one degree in Paradise by it and forgives for him a sin.” (Ahmad)

Prostration helps us to achieve high levels in paradise such as that of Jannat Al-Firdous where our beloved Prophet Muhammad will be. This can be realized by the following narration by Rabi’a bin Ka’b (RA), a companion of the Prophet:

“I was with Allah’s Messenger ﷺ one night and I brought him water and what he required.

He said to me: ‘Ask [anything you like].’

I said: ‘I ask your company in Paradise.’

He said: ‘Anything else besides it?’

I said: ‘That is all (that I require).’

He said: ‘Then help me to achieve this for you by devoting yourself often to prostration.’” (Muslim)

When the heart of a person prostrates in humility such that the person rises yet he feels his heart drawn in prostrate. It’s because heart feels the Creator’s presence, the True Guider, the Merciful, the One who removes affliction and sadness of the heart and raises a person ranks due to his Taqwa. But if your heart does not feel this humility then something is missing in you intention and you lack something. The da’iya (caller to Allah) Mishary Al-Kharraz was once asked “How do I know whether my heart is in a state of humility or not?” He answered, “When you feel it, you will know.”It is impossible for your heart to be prostrating in humility to Allah and for you not to feel it. Allah says in the Qur’an, “Their mark is on their faces from the trace of prostration…” (Quran 48:29)

The Prophet said, “My ummah on that day will surely have bright faces because of sujood, and bright arms and feet because of ablution.” (Ahmad)

The prostration is so vital that Satan extremely dislikes us for it. It has been narrated that when the son of Adam recites the verse of Sajdah (prostration) and then falls down in prostration, Satan goes into seclusion and weeps and says: “Woe unto me, the son of Adam was commanded to prostrate, and he prostrated and Paradise was entitled to him and I was commanded to prostrate, but I refused and am doomed to Hell.” (Muslim)
