Hazrat Umar (RA) – a Mulhamun

Hazrat Umar is the most respectful personality in the Islamic history after Hazrat Abu Baqar (RA).He was among Ashara-Mubashereen (The ten who were given the good news of paradise). He was known for his character, piety and sense of justice. Islam spread to almost a third of the then known world during Hadrat Umar’s (RA) reign, but even then Hadrat Umar (RA)lived an extremely simple and humble life.

Abu Hurairah (RA) reported: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, “There were Muhaddithun (the recipients of Divine inspiration) among the nations before you. If there is any of such Muhaddith among my followers, he must be ‘Umar.” [Al-Bukhari]

In Muslim, this Hadith is narrated by ‘Aishah (RA), and in both these narrations Ibn Wahb has said that the meaning of Muhaddithun is recipients of Divine inspiration.

A “Mulhamun” is a person endowed with inspiration. Things are put in their hearts by Allah, as it was done in the case of the mother of Prophet Musa. It was put in her mind by Allah that if she felt any fear, she should then trust the child to the sea. Maryam (mother of Prophet Isa) also used to receive inspiration. This Hadith evidently shows the distinction of ‘Umar (May Allah be pleased with him).
