Cursing Prohibited in Islam

Curse or Al-La’nah means deprivation of Allah’s mercy. When a person curses somebody or something, the curse goes towards the heavens and the gates of heavens get closed. The curse rebounds back towards the earth but the earth closes its gates as well. As the curse has nowhere to go, then it either returns to the person or thing being cursed or lands itself the cursing person.

Muslims should never curse one another using phrases such as, “May the curse of Allah be upon you” or “You burn in the hell fire”. Narrated by Samurah bin Jundub (RA) The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, “Do not curse one another, invoking Curse of Allah or Wrath of Allah or the fire of Hell.”

Cursing a Muslim brother is equal in magnitude of killing him. Allah’s Messenger (saw) said, ‘Cursing a believer is like murdering him.’ [Agreed upon]The act of cursing is such that one who does it can himself become a recipient of it.

Ibn Mas’ud (RA) reported: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, “A true believer is not involved in taunting, or frequently cursing (others) or in indecency or abusing.”

As stated in the above hadith a Muslim should not taunt, curse, humiliate or abuse other. Abu Hurairah (RA) said: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: “It does not befit a Siddiq (righteous Muslim) to frequently curse others.”

The habit of taunting and cursing makes a man sinful. Such a person has no value with Allah, and his testimony and intercession will not be considered on the Day of Judgment.

Abud-Darda’ (RA) said: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, “Those who frequently resort to cursing (people) would neither be accepted as witnesses nor as intercessors on the Day of Resurrection.”
