Rejection of Prayers for 40 days

Predicting Future

Narrated Safiyyah, daughter of Abu ‘Ubaid, on the authority of some of the wives of the Prophet (PBUH) who said, “He who goes to one who claims to tell about matters of the Unseen and believes in him, his Salat (prayers) will not be accepted for forty days.” [Muslim]

Allah is the knower and seer of the unseen. No living being beside Him (swt) can acquire this knowledge. But there are certain people known as soothsayers and astrologers who claim to know the unseen future, make predictions and enlighten people about things that are going to happen in their future. One thing is certain that such superstitious acts can neither benefit nor harm anyone, and are mere tricks and frauds. We learn from this Hadith is that visiting soothsayers and astrologers for the purpose of knowing from them what lies hidden in future is such a great offense that he who does it, loses all merits of his forty days Salat. Some people try to identify the criminals involved in a theft case through the so-called fortunetellers or seek their advice in matters relating to business, marriage etc. All such things are unlawful because Allah Alone knows the invisible world.

A Common Trend in today’s Muslim Ummah

‘Umar (RA) said: We have been forbidden to go into excess.

Exaggeration and artificiality are different forms of formality which some people exercise in their speech, dress and manners. For example: to make unusual efforts in hospitality and preparation of several dishes for meals also comes in the category of formality which is greatly disliked. Regrettably, present-day Muslims have made it a habit to spend lavishly on these extravagances. May Allah grant us guidance to adhere to the religious injunctions in all matters of life.

Manners of Wearing Shoes in Islam

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, “None of you should walk wearing one shoe; you should either wear them both or take them off both.”
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) saying, “When the lace of one of the shoes of any one of you is cut off, he should not walk with the other until he has got the lace repaired.” [Muslim]

Jabir (May Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) forbade a person wearing (tying up) his shoe while standing. [Abu Dawud with a good Isnad]

Eating Etiquettes in Islam

  • A Muslim should begin eating with the name of Allah. As the Prophet Muhammad (saw) said: ‘When one of you eats, he should mention Allah’s name (i.e. say ‘Bismillah); if he forgets to mention Allah’s name at the beginning, he should say (when he remembers): I begin in the name of Allah at the beginning and at the end of it (Bismillah awwalahu wa Akhirahoo).” [Narrated by Aaisha and collected by Aboo Dawood]
  • The best way to eat food is to use fingers. The Companion, lbn Ka’ab ibn Maalik reported that he saw the Messenger (saw) eating with three fingers and when he finished, he would lick them. [Saheeh Muslim]
  • Use right hand. The Prophet, (saw) said: “Do not eat with your left hand for shaitaan eats with his left hand,” [Saheeh Muslim]
  • Always eat food from a certain side of the plate which is nearest to us and not from the middle of the plate. The reason for this is that the blessings come down upon the food in its middle, therefore it should be left to last. [Aboo Dawood]
  • Don’t criticize the food. Aboo Hurairah, radhiAllahu ‘anhu reported that the Prophet (saw) never found fault with food. If he liked it, he would eat it, but if he disliked it, he just left it.
  • Shaitan is everywhere esp. while we are eating. He waits for the opportunity to grasp something from us and have his belly filled. This is why the Prophet, (saw) commanded us never to waste food, because food that we waste is eaten by shaitaan. He (saw) said: “The shaitaan is present with everyone of you in everything he does; he is even present when he eats food, so if any on of you drops a mouthful, he should remove away anything filthy on it and eat it and not leave it for the devil; and when he finishe, he should lick his fingers for he does not know in what portion of his food the blessing ties.” [Saheeh Muslim]
  • A Muslim should avoid overeating. The Prophet, (saw) said: “A Believer eats in one intestine, whereas a non-believer eats in seven intestines”. [Saheeh Muslim]
  • After eating say “Alhamdulillah”.
